The Chancellor of the Exchequer made his autumn statement about UK property on 23 November 2016. He discussed the housing challenge that the UK was facing at the moment and confirmed that there would be no changes to the recent stamp duty increases and no buy to let tax reforms on the horizon either. The property investment industry felt that the chancellor had missed an opportunity to help landlords and the housing market overall by not making any changes.
He did confirm that the charging of fees by letting agents to tenants would be banned as this was just wrong. Some letting agents have apparently been charging tenants very high fees that are not justifiable.
The new housing plan was discussed with billions of pounds being pledged for affordable housing in London and the rest of the UK. These measures were not seen as enough by the opposition and it was felt that they fall well short of what is actually needed.
